Last but not least, my AGS Capstone project. This project is considered the "big sister project" to TGPLAN because it goes more into depth on an issue, and a class that supports and revolves around that issue. For this project, my partners Margaret Mercer, Rachel Hatton and I are working towards making the young people of Austin aware of the dangers of sexual assault, false accusation, and the signs of an unhealthy relationship.
We began our project by researching the issue and finding out statistics that help support why sexual assault is such an important thing to be aware of, as well as finding assumptions about the issue. Assumption wise, there is this firm belief that men are the only ones that are doing the sexual assaulting and women are always the victims. This is untrue. Although the number of male victims that are sexually assaulted is much lower, it is not only just women that are being victimized. We cannot seem to stress this enough and want to make it clear for everyone.
The next thing that we did was figure out what organizations or what individuals would be willing to help us make students, particularly high school seniors about to go off to college, aware of all that we were focusing on. We came up with a couple different people which included Safe Place, Voices against Violence, The Austin Police Department, social workers, and teachers, We have contacted some of these collaborators and they sound excited to join in on our cause.
